Over the last 10+ years I have stayed over 600+ nights in Marriott hotels all around the world. The hotel room that we got in the Rome Westin Excelsior was the worst of any Marriott that I have ever stayed in. In fact, it is the worst of any hotel room that I have stayed in in my life. We paid over $400 USD a night. The room was almost indescribably awful so I added a few pictures so that you can get some idea of how bad things were. The walls, baseboards and "crown moulding" were all terribly chipped, broken and badly "repaired." Overall, they were awful looking and we did not want to touch them. The carpet was thread bare in some places and pulled up from the floor (trip hazard) in others. Overall, the carpet looked filthy and very worn so we did not dare to walk barefoot on the floor. The bathtub was worn down and had spray paint (or something) to to attempt to cover the bare spots (look closely at the picture and you will see the spots that are more white than the rest of the tub). The furniture was run down and the knobs, etc. were loose on the closet doors and other places. Marriott should seriously do some kind of quality inspection of every room in this place. There must be some rooms that are better than the one we had or else I am sure that the hotel would not be allowed to bear the Marriott brand name. If there are decent rooms in the hotel, they should simply never, ever book the room like the one that we got. I understand from some other guests that they had similarly bad rooms--so we know that our room is not the only one like this. The carpet in the halls outside of our room were well worn and in need of updating, too. This is an old, historic hotel. However, that does not excuse the lack of updating. I've stayed in many old, historic Marriott and other hotels that are beautiful and delightful. The staff were OK although a bit stressed (there were only 2-3 people checking in guests with a line of about 20 waiting). The food and service in the hotel restaurant was OK and the staff were kind. The hotel bar was exceptional with great music and ambiance. The hotel's location is great (which is probably why it is still open) and there are lots of attractions in the area that can be accessed by foot. All of the good I mentioned does not outweigh the overall awful condition of the room and the hotel floor that we were on. It was incredibly bad.

A superb hotel, at the end of Via Veneto. The historic center of Rome is within walking distance, but you will have to hike (the hotel is also on a hill). However, the location is very good, in a quiet neighborhood, close to the Borghese gardens. There are many restaurants and other hotels around. There is also a very convenient car park (under the Borghese Gardens) 5 minutes away. I'm Bonvoy Titanium, I had a reservation for two rooms. One became an apartment with the help of SNA, and the other was also upgraded. The room was large, with comfortable beds and a large bathroom. I think the room itself and the apartment were renovated recently, but the bathroom was older. The service was excellent, they gave us two connecting rooms - not something that has happened to us in a very long time in the Marriott system. We also had breakfast, it was a buffet and quite varied. I highly recommend the hotel.

Our stay at Westin Excelsior was absolutely wonderful! As Marriott Titanium members we were graciously upgraded to a junior suite which was very lovely. Little did we know how extra special that would be as my husband tripped and fell on our first day in Rome! Having the extra space was great as he needed some extra down time. The entire staff went above and beyond in offering help and with personal kindnesses throughout our stay. We wouldn't consider staying anywhere else when we return.

This is a lovely, old world property and nicely situated for getting around Rome. The public spaces are large and accommodating, and our room was spacious and comfortable. Bedding was excellent. The staff was very pleasant. Our only disappointment was having no walk-in shower in our bathroom and, instead, having to climb over a large tub -- not the safest situation. We do know that there are rooms with walk-in showers.
